The province of KwaZulu Natal and Durban in particular is viewed as the Mecca of traditional art and crafts in southern Africa. The more recent influence of carvings from North and Central Africa make an eclectic mix to basketry, beadwork, canvas, papermache and ceramics and not to be forgotten are the more traditional oil and watercolour artists. The trail will visit the pioneer African Art Centre which has supported the Arts for 50 years and here you will also be able to find original antique artifacts such as beadwork, Xhosa blankets and Zulu ear plugs.
We will include other selected Galleries famous for their particular interest such as traditional toys, modern fine art or oil landscapes.
Our final stop will be the extensive private collection of artifacts which include beadwork from the different regions of KwaZulu Natal dating back from the present to 19th century. The Phansi museum is set in an Old Victorian house and the fascinating visual wealth is matched by host's engaging tour.
